  4.      This information is prepared by the Radio Society of  Great
  5. Britain and broadcast on Sundays on the 80, 40 and 2 metre bands
  6. from stations throughout the British Isles.
  7.

  9.      This  is  the  GB2RS  amateur  radio  news  for  the   week
  10. commencing Sunday, 21st September.
  11.  
  12.      We begin this week with some important news for members  of
  13. the Society who are disabled. The Society has recently agreed an
  14. interim Morse  test  procedure  for  candidates  who  require  a
  15. special type of examination. Prospective disabled candidates who
  16. are in possession of a standard Morse test application form  are
  17. asked to complete the form and send it direct to  the  Society's
  18. Chief Morse Examiner, Mr. Neville Ianson G3GDO, 6  Maple  Close,
  19. Louth, Lincolnshire, LN11 0DW.

  21.      Now here is a list of  Morse  test  centres  that  will  be
  22. taking bookings for tests in October and November.  As  we  have
  23. mentioned before, places are allocated strictly on a  first-come
  24. first-served basis. The deadlines for applications for the first
  25. batch of tests is 3rd October.

  65. SATELLITE NEWS
  66. --------------

  68.      Now for some important news from AMSAT-UK. We are  informed
  69. by this group that amateurs MUST NOT use the satellite Oscar  10
  70. for the time being. At the moment we're not sure of  the  reason
  71. why but we gather it will be for some months before  it  can  be
  72. used again. This ban also applies if the satellite is in Mode B.
  73. More information will be given in GB2RS next week.

  77. SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
  78. ------------------

  80.      During the period 8th  to  14th  September  amgnetic  storm
  81. developed, caused by a coronal hole passage. The  sunspot  count
  82. again declined to zero. Solar flux levels are very steady at  68
  83. units. During the period, geomagnetic activity was  quiet  until
  84. 12th September, when a sub-storm suddenly developed, reaching an
  85. A index of 45 units. This dropped rapidly to  11  units  by  the
  86. 14th. The solar wind particle input  increased  slightly  during
  87. the storm. The INDA index for the period 25th to 31st August was
  88. unsettled and  it  was  quiet  during  the  period  1st  to  7th
  89. September.

  92. IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND AND WALES)
  93. ------------------------------------
  94.  
  95.      The  F2  critical  frequencies  at  Appleton  continued  to
  96. decline, averaging 5.3MHz.  Thes  dropped  from  5.9MHZ  on  8th
  97. September, to just 4MHz  on  the  12th.  This  was  due  to  the
  98. sub-storm, which appears to have had its major  effects  on  the
  99. mid latitudes. The darkness hour lows also declined  during  the
  100. period  but  this  was  in  part  due  to  seasonal  influences,
  101. averaging only 2.3MHz. There were a number  of  odd  periods  of
  102. sporadic E, along with total absorption and a little  spread  F,
  103. which did not help matters from the 10th to 14th September.

  106. IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND)
  107. ------------------------------------------------
  108.  
  109.      Over the same period, the F2 critical levels at South  Uist
  110. steadily declined, with daylight levels dropping from 5.5MHz  on
  111. the 8th to only 4.2MHz on the 12th. They recovered  slightly  to
  112. 4.5Hz on the 14th and it was probably  due  to  the  geomagnetic
  113. storm during this period. The darkness hour  lows  continued  to
  114. decline, averaging  1.7MHz,  due  mainly  to  seasonal  changes.
  115. Current levels are very much the same as the  same  period  last
  116. year, although there  have  been  periods  of  total  absorption
  117. lasting up to 5 hours on the  12th.  There  was  also  a  little
  118. sporadic E and some spread F,  which  indicates  that  the  dark
  119. hours have been very unsettled.

  122. SOLAR FORECAST
  123. --------------
  124.  
  125.      Solar activity is expected to remain at a very  low  level.
  126. Due to the equinox period, geomagnetic levels  are  expected  to
  127. increase and this will affect ionospheric  conditions  generally
  128. but will have a greater effect in the north. Solar  flux  levels
  129. are not expected to change from their present 68  units.  During
  130. daylight hours in the south, the F2 critical frequency level  is
  131. expected to be about 5.3MHz,  corresponding  to  MUFs  of  about
  132. 16MHz. In the north, the level is expected to  be  4.5MHz,  with
  133. MUFs of 14MHz. For the darkness hours,  the  south  could  reach
  134. critical levels of 2.1MHz or MUFs  of  6.5MHz.  However,  higher
  135. noise levels are expected during more northern contacts.

  139. MAIN NEWS

  142.      The Harlow Mobile Rally takes place today, 21st  September,
  143. at the Harlow Sports Centre. The rally is open  from  10am  till
  144. 5pm. There is free parking, a trade show,  exhibits  by  special
  145. interest groups, a bring and buy  stand  and  licenced  bar  and
  146. refreshments. Talk-in will be available on S22.

  149.      The Repeater Management Group of the RSGB  is  looking  for
  150. volunteers to act as  corresponding  members,  one  in  Northern
  151. Ireland and the other in the London and Hertfordshire area.  The
  152. main responsibilities of the volunteers will be to liase between
  153. the Society's VHF Committee and repeater groups in these  areas.

  160.      Now for some news of a possible new repeater on Emley Moor.
  161. It is proposed  that  the  Emley  Moor  IBA  station  should  be
  162. considered as a site for  a  24cm  television  repeater.  In  an
  163. effort to  discover  how  much  enthusiasm  there  is  for  this
  164. project, a meeting has been organised for the 24th of  September
  165. at 7:30pm at the Emley Moor transmitting station, National  Grid
  166. Reference SE 122128.  All  interested  parties  are  invited  to
  167. attend.

  171. SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS
  172. ----------------------

  174.      Special event stations to listen for this week include:-
  175.  
  176.      GM3USR - from the Magnum Leisure Centre  at  Cunningham  in
  177. Scotland. The Cunningham and district ARC is erecting  permanent
  178. HF and VHF aerials on the roof of the leisure centre,  which  is
  179. now the club's headquarters. During today (21st  September)  the
  180. club will be running a commemorative  station,  working  on  all
  181. bands and all modes to celebrate their move to the new  building
  182. and the Magnum's 10th anniversary.

  184.      GB8oo - run by the  Maxwelltown  ARC,  operating  from  St.
  185. Michael's Church Hall, Dumfries, to celebrate  800  years  as  a
  186. Royal Borough. There will be activity on 160 and 10  metres  and
  187. also on 2 metres FM, SSB and CW. A special QSL card will be sent
  188. for  all  contacts  made,  including  SWL  reports,  until  28th
  189. September.

  191.      GB4 and GB8NSY - run by the New Scotland Yard ARS. Activity
  192. will be on HF, VHF and UHF.  This  is  to  commemorate  the  5th
  193. anniversary of amateur radio  operation  from  the  Metropolitan
  194. Police HQ in London. For security reasons  the  station  is  not
  195. open to the public, but QSL cards will be available.

  197.      GB4EMC - operated at the Enfield Town Show by the Southgate
  198. ARC. Activity will be on all HF bands with  an  emphasis  on  80
  199. metres and also on 144MHz. Operation will be between 1pm and 6pm
  200. today (21st September).

  202.      Gb2MFM - operating from the Military  Vehicle  and  Amateur
  203. Radio Rally at Monkton Farley Nine, near Bath, on 27th and  28th
  204. September. Operation will be  on  SSB,  FM  and  CW  on   80  to
  205. metres. There will be talk-in on S16 and local repeaters will be

  209.      Here is some news for amateurs active on  the  18MHz  band.
  210. They will appreciate that USA amateurs do not as yet have access
  211. to this band. However, in a recent approach to the FCC it became
  212. apparent that it was unlikely that American  amateurs  would  be
  213. granted access to the 18MHz band until 1989. This is because  of
  214. operation of Government services. Access to the  18MHz  band  is
  215. currently enjoyed by some 57 other nations.

  217.      The ARRL recently announced a special DX century  award  to
  218. celebrate the 50th anniversary of DXCC, which takes  place  next
  219. year. The  ARRL  also  announced  that  it  would  consider  the
  220. possibility of restructuring the DXCC award, perhaps with a  new
  221. award to replace the present DXCC.

  225. callsigns issued as of Wednesday 17th September were in the G0FS
  226. and G1WE series.
